MOUNJARO
WHAT IS MONJAURO?
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only injectable medication authorised in the UK for weight management in eligible adults.
It works by mimicking two naturally occurring hormones, GIP and GLP-1, which are involved in appetite and blood sugar regulation. This can help reduce appetite, increase feelings of fullness and support weight loss when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
Mounjaro is also licensed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, where it helps improve blood glucose control by supporting insulin release and reducing glucagon levels.
Treatment should only be prescribed following an appropriate clinical assessment to ensure it is safe and suitable for you.
HOW DOES MONJAURO WORK?
Mounjaro works by mimicking the effects of two natural hormones, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). These hormones help to control blood sugar levels by increasing insulin secretion, slowing gastric emptying, and suppressing glucagon secretion.
HOW EFFECTIVE IS MOUNJARO?
Mounjaro has been shown to be effective in promoting weight loss in adults with type 2 diabetes and obesity. In one study, patients who took Mounjaro for 84 weeks had an average weight loss of 10.2kg, compared with a weight loss of 1.2kg in patients who took a placebo. Mounjaro was also shown to be more effective than semaglutide for weight loss.
In a research involving about 2500 patients with Mounjaro (tirzepatide), patients on:
- Tirzepatide 5mg: Lost 16% weight
- Tirzepatide 10mg: Lost 21.4% weight
- Tirzepatide 15mg: Lost 22.5% weight
- Placebo: Lost 2.4% weight
